old echoes 3/31/13
Our friend Randy brings his metal detector around sometimes... he will help us find lost horseshoes or jewelry if we can tell him what to look for and where. We have been able to help several of our guests that way.
He loves to find "wheat pennies" which are from the early 1950's. It's part of his metal-detecting hobby, to make note of where there are several wheat pennies in the ground. He usually finds a few old nickels and dimes too, and then he knows there was once maybe a store there, or a school bus stop or a roadside picnic table.
But around the old camp chapel he only finds pennies, plenty of pennies but not many other coins. This puzzled him for awhile . . .
Then an old-timer told him that back 60 years ago, when kids memorized Bible verses, Dr Brown would let them reach into a big glass jar of pennies and take out as many as they could hold in one hand. You can imagine they would drop a few, and now Randy is finding them!!
Old echoes of early days at camp are still bouncing around.
